It is common for WordPress beginners to be confused between posts and pages. WordPress offers two content types by default, posts and pages. While the two may appear similar in the dashboard, there are some key differences between Posts vs Pages in WordPress.


If you use WordPress as a blog,then the majority of the content will be uploaded using posts. Posts are content entries that WordPress displays on the homepage of your blog in a reverse chronological order.Posts are meant to be timely because of the reverse order in which they are displayed to the reader. WordPress also archives older posts according to month and year. A reader has to dig deeper to find older posts on your blog. Posts can further be categorized in categories and tags.Posts are syndicated via RSS feeds, enabling the reader to find out when you upload a new post. The timely nature of posts makes them social. You can use social sharing plugins to enable your readers to share the posts via social media websites, such as Facebook and Twitter.Posts also encourage user conversation with their in-built commenting features. However, blog owners can turn off comments from the WordPress Settings.


Pages reflect static, one-off type content. For instance, the About Us section of your blog is meant to remain the same and qualifies as a WordPress Page. Pages are not time-bound, but rather timeless content entities that are supposed to be displayed on your blog, irrespective of the date and time. For the same reason, Pages do not show up in your RSS feeds and are generally not meant to be social.

Pages are hierarchical by nature and you can have subpages within a page. This also keeps the pages organized, and it gets easier and more feasible to assign a custom template to pages.

WordPress allows developers to customize the look of every page. While posts and pages generally appear alike, the custom page templates come in handy when you create a portfolio page or a landing page.

SEO Advantages of Posts over Pages or Vice Versa

While both can be indexed by the search engine, a post is usually regarded more SEO friendly than a page. While the static content of pages has its own value, posts offer temporal content that is linked within tags, categories and archives. Pages have to be linked manually by the user. That said, both offer their own value and it would be wrong to term one inherently more SEO friendly than the other.

Converting Pages to Posts and Vice Versa

If you initially start with a post and publish it, but later realize that the content qualifies as a page, you can convert the post to a page. Likewise, the opposite is also achievable. A number of WordPress plugins are available for converting pages to posts and vice versa. While most conversion plugins are reliable, it is still recommended to backup database before proceeding with the conversion.
